Lloyd

I will admit the absence of her delivered an eerie feeling of loneliness. She called a little while ago and told me that the power had gone down in her area. I stared out the window. A moderate blizzard had crippled the DC area. Good thing I have a Hummer. It had accumulated to nine inches before finally tapering off.

“Hey, Derrick, what’s up? Sounds like you have a cold.”

“I do. Hey, did you and Karen get those numbers straight?”

“I’m straightening them out now.” I was sitting behind my computer at home, getting it all cleared when he called. I was finally able to figure out where the missing money was. I was just as anal as any accountant – never giving up until things added up to the penny.

“Glad to hear that. I need you to do me another favor, if you can.”

“Cool, what is it?”

“Call those folks up in Michigan. Make sure they’ve sent those skis to Arron’s Sporting Goods. I would be able to do it but I left their number on my desk. You know they’re one of our newest clients and we have to make sure shipments are not late.”

“No problem. When do you think we’ll be able to return to work?”

“Probably not for a couple of days,”

“What have you been up to all day?” I knew Derrick had to be losing his mind. He wasn’t the type of guy that liked to sit home and do nothing. But I was sure he didn’t chance going out in that terrible weather in his condition.

“Just sitting back chilling, I had a headache and sore throat all day yesterday. I’m just going to lay low today.”

“I feel you.”

He chuckled easily.

“Heard from Pamella today?”

“Yeah, talked to her earlier, she said there was a power outage in her area.”

“That’s bad.”

“I know. I’m gonna go over there and help her out after I get these numbers back on track. All it takes is entering them on the spreadsheet now. As you always say: money first.”

“My man!”

I knew he was proud of me. I’d worked hard for him the past eight and a half years. Derrick had a lot of confidence in me, and that gave me a feeling of encouragement. He’d always been my mentor, an example of what hard work and dedication could bring. That brotha used to be in his office 24/7 when he first launched the business. That’s when he had a suite in a small, two-story building in Annandale. Now he’s expanded, has his own tower. We’re opening a second office in DC next month. My mother called after I talked to Derrick.

“Yeah, Mother. What’s up?”

“Can we meet for lunch this Saturday?”

“Sure. I would love that.” Ever since Christmas, she and I hadn’t spoken much.

“I really miss you, darling. I know you’ve been upset with me.”

I was no longer upset. “Mother, don’t worry about that.”

“But can I offer a loving suggestion?”

“I’m all ears.” I knew she was about to voice her opinion about my girl.

“No matter who you choose, you’ll always be my son.
